N.H. – Hear the fascinating result of a 40-year collaboration when the Kronos Quartet performs the music of composer Terry Riley at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at the Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth College. Kronos and Riley will be joined by Riley’s son, guitarist Gyan Riley (“a one-man American-music machine, amicably ranging across the fields of jazz, world music, and post-minimalism” — The New Yorker).

Saturday February 8, Terry Riley & Gyan Riley begin their world-wide tour at 7 PM at the Camptonville Community Center, celebrating 85 trips around the sun for the amazing Terry Riley. Advance tickets are now available at brownpapertickets.com and at BriarPatch Coop in Grass Valley, with a discount available for members of the Center. Terry and Gyan will perform key works that define Terry’s output with elements of traditional jazz, ragtime, minimalism, and Indian Raga. Gyan, Terry’s son and favorite collaborator, is a virtuoso in his own right. Terry’s influence stretches farther and wider than almost any other figure in 20th century music, including rock, the string quartet, the symphony hall, development of keyboard styles, and electronic music, experimental as well as popular genres such as house and techno. He remains a seminal figure in music history. Come be amazed! Tickets are $30 ($25 for Center members); advance tickets are recommended. Doors open at 6:30 pm, with snacks and drinks available by donation.

American composer/pianist/vocalist Terry Riley brings his unique compositions to Benaroya Hall for one night only, drawing on his decades-long work in minimalist music and his studies of jazz and Indian classical music. Riley originally launched what is now known as the minimalist movement with his classic piece In C, composed in 1964. This seminal work had an enormous impact on the course of western music. He has also been a student of Indian classical music since 1970 when he became a disciple of the great Kirana master, Pandit Pran Nath.

This larger-than-life character created an unconventional minimalist musical style that inspired many: Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Brian Eno, John Cale, Pete Townshend, and many more. Terry Riley: Live at 85! features Terry Riley, accompanied by his son Gyan, presenting key pieces that define his work with elements of minimalism, jazz, ragtime, and Indian raga.

Terry Riley is back in Berlin with his son Gyan for a very special residency of 2 nights at Berghain for a rare performance of 2 most iconic works of the legendary Minimalist, “A Rainbow in Curved Air” and “Persian Surgery Dervishes” on Synthesizers and Guitar. The father and son Duo will interpret the 2 albums in front of a standing audience in a limited capacity room, for a better immersive listening experience on the world famed sound of the world famed club. Terry and Gyan have been recently touring the world together, performing mostly new pieces and improvised sessions on Piano and Guitar, creating a beautifully crafted language, an embodiment of Terry Riley’s original intention in composition and writing. But this special set of 2 concerts will see the duo explore original material, to create a new and more modern interpretation of the masterpieces.

The song "In C" has gone down in the history of music. He is one of the four great artists (along with La Monte Young, Steve Reich and Philip Glass) minimalism and undoubtedly one of the most influential figures in the history of music of the second half. Of the 20th century - Terry Riley will perform with his son Gyan at the only club concerts in Poland. On April 9 and 10 we will hear them in Pardon, To Tu.

Terry Riley with Gyan Riley: Live at 85!

California composer Terry Riley launched what is now known as the Minimalist movement with his revolutionary classic IN C in 1964. This seminal work provided a new concept in musical form based on interlocking repetitive patterns. Its impact changed the course of 20th century music and its influence has been heard in the works of prominent composers such as Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and John Adams as well as in the music of rock groups such as The Who, The Soft Machine, Tangerine Dream, and many others. TMA’s intimate GlasSalon becomes the perfect space for Riley’s hypnotic, multi-layered, polymetric, and eastern-flavored improvisations with his son Gyan Riley on guitar.
Tickets are $25 for Museum members, $35 for nonmembers.
